Es una planta de reproducci\u00f3n vegetativa obligada debido a la imposibilidad de producir semillas de origen sexual. esta caracter\u00edstica ha restringido la mejora de este cultivo a la mera selecci\u00f3n clonal de los mejores genotipos. La transformaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica podr\u00eda abrir la puerta a la introducci\u00f3n de genes en este cultivo. No obstante, esta t\u00e9cnica precisa de un sistema de cultivo \u00abin vitro\u00bb muy eficiente.  en este trabajo se describe el establecimiento de un protocolo eficiente de callog\u00e9nesis y regeneraci\u00f3n y se determina la variabilidad gen\u00e9tica de estos par\u00e1metros. Por otra parte, se estudia el efecto genotipo en otro proceso esencial del cultivo \u00abin vitro\u00bb de ajo como es la micropropagaci\u00f3n.  por \u00faltimo, se determina la competencia de diferentes tejidos de ajo para expresar adn ex\u00f3geno. Se detect\u00f3 una actividad nucleasa endogena que era capaz de degradar el adn introducido mediante el sistema biol\u00edstico, impidiendo su expresi\u00f3n.
