Los resultados que encontramos han producido un cambio radical en la concepci\u00f3n preexistente acerca de las propiedades y funciones de este sistema en las c\u00e9lulas nucleadas del mam\u00edfero, en particular:  1) se describe por vez primera que el sistema puede intercambiar otros cationes divalentes distintos al mg2+ (ba2+, ca2+, sr2+, mn2+, fe2+, co2+, ni2+, cu2+, zn2+), tanto con el na+ del exterior celular como con el magnesio del interior celular.  2) avanzamos la hip\u00f3tesis de que el sistema utiliza el gradiente energ\u00e9tico del cati\u00f3n na+ para mantener las concentraciones de estos cationes divalentes muy por debajo de las concentraciones que les corresponder\u00edan por causa del potencial el\u00e9ctrico de la membrana en reposo y del gradiente electroqu\u00edmico correspondiente a cada uno de ellos.  3) el inter\u00e9s de los hallazgos se hace m\u00e1s patente si se considera que todos estos cationes, si bien son necesarios en peque\u00f1as concentraciones para el funcionalismo celular, resultan enormemente t\u00f3xicos cuando su concentraci\u00f3n se eleva por encima de su valor normal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Datos acad\u00e9micos de
