Aunque el trabajo se centra en dos dispositivos concretos-los conversores te\/tm electro-opticos y los laseres de semiconductor multielemento con guiado por ganancia-, los resultados obtenidos permiten entender ciertas caracteristicas de otros dispositivos pasivos construidos sobre materiales anisotropos, y de laseres con guiado por ganancia que operen en varios modos transversales, como los laseres de area ancha. El trabajo puede, por tanto, dividirse en dos partes fundamentales, segun la naturaleza pasiva o activa de los dispositivos que se pretenden analizar.  dentro del desarrollo de modelos teoricos para el estudio de dispositivos pasivos, se presentan dos metodos de obtencion de las soluciones modales de guias anisotropas con tensor dielectrico en la configuracion tipica de los dispositivos conversores de polarizacion electroopticos.  respecto a los dispositivos activos, se presenta un modelo de guia de ondas variable para el estudio de laseres multielemento con guiado por
