Primero fu\u00e9 inducida cuando se utilizaron acetato o acidos grasos como fuente de carbono. el incremento de la actividad espec\u00edfica con respecto al control con glucosa fu\u00e9 superior a un 850 c\/o.  la glucosa ejerci\u00f3 una inactivaci\u00f3n catab\u00f3lica \u00abin vivo\u00bb. El proceso de purificaci\u00f3n de la icl tuvo un rendimiento del 7 o\/o y un factor de purificaci\u00f3n de 583 veces. La enzima result\u00f3 ser un tetr\u00e1mero con una masa molecular de 250 kda, constituida por subunidades id\u00e9nticas. se determinaron las caracter\u00edsticas f\u00edsicoqu\u00edmicas. En cuanto las caracter\u00edsticas cin\u00e9ticas, la icl sigui\u00f3 una cin\u00e9tica de michaelis menten con respecto al verdadero sustrato, el complejo mgisocitrato. En la reacci\u00f3n de rotura, los iones mg se comportan como activadores no esenciales de tipo mixto lineal. El mecanismo es compatible con un mecanismo ordenado unibi, en el que el succinato es el primer producto liberado. La enzima fue inactivada mediante modificaci\u00f3n oxidativa por un sistema feii ascorbato dependiente de oxigeno. La oxidaci\u00f3n se produce a trav\u00e9s de la reacci\u00f3n de fenton, generando especies activadas del oxigeno.  el an\u00e1lisis de la p\u00e9rdida de actividad indica que el sistema act\u00faa mediante la oxidaci\u00f3n de residuos de cite\u00edna localizados en la regi\u00f3n del centro de uni\u00f3n del sustrato.  el dietilpirocarbonato inactiv\u00f3 a la enzima, siguiendo un mecanismo de reacci\u00f3n que se desarrolla por la formaci\u00f3n de un complejo no covalente enzimadepc. El espectro de absorci\u00f3n de la enzima modificada tiene un solo m\u00e1ximo de absorbancia a 240 nm, caracter\u00edstico de la modificaci\u00f3n de residuos de histidina. La inactivaci\u00f3n completa se obtuvo tras la modificaci\u00f3n de 11 residuos de histidina por subunidad, siendo s\u00f3lo uno de ellos esencial para la cat\u00e1lisis.
