En 1985, la fusi\u00f3n de protoplastos entr\u00f3 a formar parte, cada vez con m\u00e1s importancia, de los programas de mejora de c\u00edtricos. Esto es debido principalmente a la posibilidad que ofrece a los mejoradores de vitar algunas de las dificultades encontradas en la mejora tradicional relacionadas con la compleja biolog\u00eda reproductiva de los c\u00edtricos, as\u00ed como a la de poder superar las barreras secuales existentes entre los c\u00edtricos y algunas especies relacionadas de contrastados inter\u00e9s en un programa de mejora. Algunos de estos problemas son la esterilidad total o parcial de polen y\/o \u00f3vulos, fen\u00f3menos de autoincompatibilidad e incompatibilidad entre genotipos, la apomixis parcial, o la elevada hetrocigosis de la mayor\u00eda de las especies.  la hibridaci\u00f3n som\u00e1tica puede ser utilizada en la mejora de patrones de c\u00edricos con el fin de generar genotipos alotetrapoides que incorporen los genomas completos de ambos parentales sin fen\u00f3menos de segregaci\u00f3n, combinando asi rasgos de resistencia o tolerancia frente a factores bi\u00f3ticos o abi\u00f3ticos, independientemente el nivel de hetrocigosis de los parentales o de la incompatibilidad sexual entre especies o g\u00e9neros.  la fusi\u00f3n de protoplastos puede tener aplicaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n a a nivel de la obtenci\u00f3n de cultivares triplides, especialmente en mandarinos.
