El \u00e1rea es adecuada para estudiar los procesos magm\u00e1ticos que ocurren en los m\u00e1rgenes convergentes, puesto que ha sido afectada por una pluma mant\u00e9lica y presenta una extensa zona de subducci\u00f3n. En este trabajo se ha determinado la estructura y las propiedades f\u00edsicas de la litosfera del istmo y la geometr\u00eda de la subducci\u00f3n utilizando datos de sismicidad local (tomograf\u00eda en 3d), registros s\u00edsmicos marinos y terrestres y gravimetr\u00eda (modelizaci\u00f3n directa en 2d).  a partir de estos datos se ha obtenido un modelo global, que ajusta simult\u00e1neamente todos los observables geof\u00edsicos. Este modelo muestra la existencia de una corteza gruesa (unos 40 km) en el istmo, bajo la cual subduce una corteza oce\u00e1nica est\u00e1ndar (6-7 km). Asimismo, se ha constatado la pesencia de un manto superior an\u00f3malo, constituido por materiales de baja velocidad s\u00edsmica y densidad. El \u00e1ngulo de subducci\u00f3n es de unos 35 grados.  este modelo ha sido contrastado con informaci\u00f3n adicional tect\u00f3nica y geol\u00f3gica, que ha permitido estimar el posible origen y la
