Estos compuestos son intermedios de la reacci\u00f3n de s\u00edntesis del dtdmac (dimethylditallowammonium chloride), el tensioactivo cati\u00f3nico m\u00e1s utilizado. Son adem\u00e1s compuestos muy persistentes, ampliamente distribuidos en los diferentes compartimentos ambientales y por consiguiente v\u00e1lidos como trazadores de contaminaci\u00f3n urbana. La extracci\u00f3n con disolventes bajo presi\u00f3n ha resultado ser una t\u00e9cnica competitiva para la extracci\u00f3n de tams de sedimentos marinos y se ha aplicado, por tanto, en la extracci\u00f3n de tams de sedimentos de la bah\u00eda del sur de california. en esta zona se ha evaluado la contaminaci\u00f3n urbana utilizando como trazadores las trialquilaminasy el coprostanol.  un segundo estudio ambiental se ha llevado a cabo en aguas del mar negro noroccidental, un mar continental y an\u00f3xico que recibe gran cantidad de contaminantes org\u00e1nicos de origen antropog\u00e9nico mayoritariamente v\u00eda el principal r\u00edo de la zona, el danubio. Se ha estudiado la distribuci\u00f3n superficial de policlorobifenilos, hidrocarburos arom\u00e1ticos polic\u00edclicos, plaguicidas clorados (ddts, hchs, dieldrin) y trazadores de contaminaci\u00f3n (tams, cop) en las fases disuelta y particulada as\u00ed como la distribuci\u00f3n a lo largo de la columna de agua para evaluar los procesos que tiene lugar especialmente en la interficie
