Se ha determinado que la bacteria fototr\u00f3fica rhodobacter capsulatus hidroliza el parati\u00f3n (insecticida organofosforado muy utilizado) y libera 4-nitrofenol, que se metaboliza en condiciones microaer\u00f3bicas obten\u00edendose 4-nitrocatecol como intermediario. Esta bacteria tambi\u00e9n es capaz de reducir anaer\u00f3bicamente el 2,4-dinitrofenol a 2-amino-4-nitrofenol, en una reacci\u00f3n que se afecta por fuentes de nitr\u00f3geno oxidadas y reducidas. Adem\u00e1s, se describe por primera vez la mineralizaci\u00f3n del 2,4-dinitrofenol en ausencia de ox\u00edgeno. Dicha mineralizaci\u00f3n se ha observado en otra bacteria del mismo g\u00e9nero, r. Sphaeroides.
