Muestra unas condiciones \u00f3ptimas de ensayo para una temperatura de incubaci\u00f3n de om.C y un ph de 9.  los par\u00e1metros cin\u00e9ticos de la reacci\u00f3n (km) para cada uno de los sutratos son de 1,1 mm (para el neu5ac) y de 0,45 mm (para el ctp). concentraciones superiores a 5 mm del sustrato ctp inhiben la actividad de la enzima con una ki de 17,2 mm. La enzima puede utilizar como sustratos, con la misma eficacia, tanto el neu5ac como el neu5gc. En ambos casos muestra un rquerimiento absoluto de cationes mg++ para llevar a cabo su funci\u00f3n catal\u00edtica. Concentraciones crecientes de cmp-neu5ac, producto de la reacci\u00f3n, producen una progresiva inhibici\u00f3n de la actividad enzim\u00e1tica, regulando de este modo la actividad de la cmp-neu5ac sintetasa y a su vez el metabolismo de los \u00e1cidos si\u00e1licos. el an\u00e1lisis proteol\u00edtico de la cmp-neu5ac sintetasa de rata ha revelado la existencia de diferentes dominios estructurales con pesos moleculares de 56, 53, 51, 42, 41, 39 y 31 kda flanqueados por zonas desestructuradas accesibles a la acci\u00f3n de las distintas proteasas.
