La limitaci\u00f3n del o2 ambiental reduce, in vivo, la actividad y la expresi\u00f3n de las isoformas hep\u00e1ticas, por lo que se ha propuesto que la hipoxia local provocada por el consumo cr\u00f3nico de etanol (fukui y cols., 1990; arteel y cols., 1997) podr\u00eda estar implicada en las alteraciones del metabolismo de la metionina observadas en la cirrosis alcoh\u00f3lica (chawla y jones, 1994; chawla y cols., 1996).  en este estudio se muestra que la hipoxia provoca la inactivaci\u00f3n de la mat hep\u00e1tica en cultivos primarios de hepatocitos de rata, una inactivaci\u00f3n en la que participan la inducci\u00f3n de \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico sintasa y el descenso de la concentraci\u00f3n intracelular de glutation. Asimismo, la hipoxia reduce la expresi\u00f3n de la matactuando tanto a nivel transcripcional como postranscripcional, gracias a un mecanismo de detecci\u00f3n de las variaciones de la concentraci\u00f3n de o2 basado en una hemoprote\u00edna independiente de la cadena de transporte electr\u00f3nico mitocondrial y de las concentraciones intracelulares de atp y de h2o2. Por \u00faltimo, el 3-metilcolantreno, un hidrocarburo capaz de interferir en el mecanismo de regulaci\u00f3n de la expresi\u00f3n g\u00e9nica activado por la hipoxia (schmidt y bardfield, 1996; gradin y cols, 1996; reisdorph y lindahl, 1998), inhibe la expresi\u00f3n de la mat tanto in vivocomo in vitro y este efecto es independiente de la activaci\u00f3n del receptor de arilhidrocarburos y
