Este incremento se produjo tanto a nivel intracelular, por parte de la xantina oxidasa, como a nivel extracelular, por parte de una oxidasa localizada en la membrana citopl\u00e1smica con caracter\u00edsticas similares alas de la nadph oxidasa del neutr\u00f3filo. Los oxidantes formados en este proceso fueron el super\u00f3xido,el h2o2 y, probablemente, el peroxinitrito, producto de la reacci\u00f3n entre el \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico y el super\u00f3xido. por otro lado, la hipoxia tuvo efectos importantes sobre la expresi\u00f3n y actividad enzim\u00e1tica de dos enzimas de la familia de las \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico sintetasas. La expresi\u00f3n y actividad de la \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico sintetasa constitutiva de c\u00e9lula endotelial (enos) disminuyeron significativamente en hipoxia mientras que aumentaron en hiperoxia. La inducci\u00f3n por citoquinas de la \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico sintetasa inducible (inos) en c\u00e9lulas endoteliales qued\u00f3 atenuada de forma significativa en hipoxia.
