En primer lugar, analizar la continuidad y las innovaciones con respecto al primer proyecto de la teor\u00eda de la justicia, elaborado por rawls entre 1955 y 1971. En segundo lugar, reconstruir la trama argumentativa de todo este proceso de revisi\u00f3n.  el trabajo trata as\u00ed de mostrar c\u00f3mo las revisiones que siguieron a la publicaci\u00f3n de a theory of justice en 1971 implicaron una reformulaci\u00f3n de la idea central de justicia como equidad (defendida como un constructo moral) en t\u00e9rminos pol\u00edticos. En respuesta a sus cr\u00edticos, rawls reconoce las limitaciones pr\u00e1cticas de su dise\u00f1o normativo y emprende un nuevo intento de fundamentaci\u00f3n. En esta l\u00ednea es preciso entender el cometido de la serie de trabajos iniciada en 1972, que culminar\u00eda con la publicaci\u00f3n de political liberalism en 1993. La defensa del liberalismo pol\u00edtico no supondr\u00eda, sin embargo, un desmentido de la argumentaci\u00f3n moral de su teor\u00eda de la justicia, aunque s\u00ed volver\u00eda a abrir el debate sobre su adecuaci\u00f3n.  de esta forma, el trabajo pone de manifiesto que la formulaci\u00f3n rawlsiana de un liberalismo pol\u00edtico, en la tradici\u00f3n del liberalismo social de john stuart mill, no s\u00f3lo no contradice, sino que exige con plena coherencia la defensa del universalismo moral de su teor\u00eda de la justicia. As\u00ed como del igualitarismo de los derechos que \u00e9sta supone. El cambio de registro en su argumentaci\u00f3n viene motivado por el intento de dar respuesta al problema del pluralismo pol\u00edtico generado por las democracias liberales.  en efecto, es en la ecrucijada que configuran las condiciones normativas y pr\u00e1cticas de la convivencia civil cuando se pone en juego la virtualidad moral y pol\u00edtica de la idea rawlsiana de justicia como equidad.
