Se ha identificado un gen, card, que se encuentra implicado en ambos procesos, de manera que una mutaci\u00f3n en dicho gen impide a la bacteria fructificar y sintetizar carotenoides. La secuenciaci\u00f3n del gen card revela la presencia de una prote\u00edna cuya regi\u00f3n carboxi-terminal muestra homolog\u00eda con el dominio de uni\u00f3n a dna de las prote\u00ednas tipo hmgi(y), siendo la primera vez que se encuentra dicho dominio en un organismo procari\u00f3tico. La prote\u00edna card se une in vitro a una secuencia rica en pares a-t requerida para la expresi\u00f3n de un promotor dependiente de card. utilizando nuevos programas de comparaci\u00f3n de secuencia, el extremo amino de card muestra homolog\u00eda con el dominio de interacci\u00f3n con la polimerasa de rna de las prote\u00ednas trcf (prote\u00ednas que acoplan el proceso de transcripci\u00f3n al de reparaci\u00f3n, aumentando la tasa de reparaci\u00f3n en la cadena que se est\u00e1 transcribiendo).  por otro lado, card es necesario para que se expresen correctamente los genes que sintetizan dos de las cinco se\u00f1ales intercelulares necesarias para la formaci\u00f3n de cuerpos fruct\u00edferos, las se\u00f1ales a y c.  una b\u00fasqueda experimental de genes hom\u00f3logos a card ha dado resultados positivos s\u00f3lo en el grupo de las mixobacterias, en concreto con el orden cystobacterineae al que pertenece myxococcus xanthus. Se ha clonado el gen hom\u00f3logo a card en una bacteria perteneciente a este grupo, stigmatella aurantiaca.
