El estudio consta de una parte experimental y de una fase de muestreo de poblaciones naturales. Los resultados m\u00e1s importantes son: 1) s. Muticum presenta un ajuste entre algunos componentes de su ciclo vital y los ciclos ambientales; fundamentalmente entre el fotoperiodo el ciclo de biomasa. 2) la estructura de la poblaci\u00f3n evidencia procesos densodependientes. Hay dos procesos separados en el tiempo, la autoatenuaci\u00f3n en primavera y verano y el reclutamiento en oto\u00f1o e invierno. 3) hay un cambio morfol\u00f3gico en respuesta a la densidad. A altas densidades las plantas son esbeltas, de mayor talla, con menor n\u00famero de ramas laterales y dominancia apical m\u00e1s acusada. La construcci\u00f3n modular de la especie constituye un camino sencillo para aliviar los posibles efectos negativos de la competencia intraespec\u00edfica. 4) s. Muticum presenta un elevado potencial reproductor (300.000 embriones por gramo de peso seco). Aunque la sombra de dispersi\u00f3n es reducida, el desprendimiento de ramas f\u00e9rtiles permite la colonizaci\u00f3n de \u00e1reas cercanas. La mayor mortalidad de los reclutas ocurre en los dos primeros meses, no detect\u00e1ndose evidencias de mortalidad densodependiente. 5) se detectan tanto un coste asociado a la reproducci\u00f3n como una dependencia positiva del tama\u00f1o de la planta en la asignaci\u00f3n de recursos a la reproducci\u00f3n.
