Mientras que la detecci\u00f3n inmunocitoqu\u00edmica de la serotonina es factible en el momento actual, no ocurre as\u00ed con la melatonina. Dado que la melatonina se involucra en la regulaci\u00f3n de distintos procesos biol\u00f3gicos normales o patol\u00f3gicos, el desarrollo de programas de investigaci\u00f3n que precisen del conocimiento de la actividad funcional de la gl\u00e1ndula pineal necesitan de una metodolog\u00eda de trabajo que nos acerque al conocimiento de la actividad biosint\u00e9tica de la gl\u00e1ndula. Por ello, en nuestro trabajo de tesis doctoral hemos estudiado con m\u00e9todos citoqu\u00edmicos e inmunocitoqu\u00edmicos la presencia de enzimas (atpasa calcio dependiente, atpasa na+-k+ dependiente, prote\u00edn kinasa c, tiaminopirofosfatasa y fosfatasas \u00e1cidas) y de prote\u00ednas ligadoras del i\u00f3n calcio (calbindina y calmodulina) involucradas en la s\u00edntesis y liberaci\u00f3n de melatonina por los pinealocitos.
