La teor\u00eda m\u00e1s famosa enunciada en los a\u00f1os 60 para explicar la presencia de esta estructura, la teor\u00eda de las ondas de densidad, no ha sido a\u00fan comprobada ni refutada definitivamente. El objetivo de la tesis es utilizar una de las predicciones de esta teor\u00eda, el disparo de la formaci\u00f3n estelar por las ondas de densidad, como elemento de prueba. En la memoria se presentan im\u00e1genes de una muestra de galaxias \u00abgrand design\u00bb con brazos espirales bien marcados. Las im\u00e1genes fueron tomadas en varias bandas fotom\u00e9tricas diferentes. la fotometr\u00eda de regiones escogidas en los brazos y en las zonas entre ellos se utiliza para estudiar el ritmo de formaci\u00f3n estelar y su relaci\u00f3n con las ondas de densidad. Dos resultados relevantes de la tesis son la posible bimodalidad (brazos, inter-brazos) de la funci\u00f3n inicial de masas y el descubrimiento de un incremento del ritmo de formaci\u00f3n estelar
