Para poder compensar la presi\u00f3n osm\u00f3tica externa, entre otros mecanismos de adaptaci\u00f3n acumulan intracelularmente una serie de compuestos org\u00e1nicos osmoprotectores o solutos compartibles. el objeto de la presente tesis  ha sido el estudio de los mecanismos de s\u00edntesis y transporte de dichos solutos, utilizando como modelo la bacteria halomonas elongata dsm 3043. En primer lugar, se procedi\u00f3 a determinar la naturaleza de los solutos acumulados, encontr\u00e1ndose que h. Elongata acumula ecto\u00edna e hidroxiecto\u00edna por sintexis \u00abde novo\u00bb y betaina por transporte y por s\u00edntesis a partir de colina. De hecho, hemos caracterizado un transportador de alta afinidad por la beta\u00edna (km= 3  m) y otro por la colina (km= 10  m). A fin de estudiar los genes responsables de la s\u00edntesis de ecto\u00edna , se ha construido y caracterizado una serie de mutantes sensibles a la sal, incapaces de sintetizar ecto\u00edna. El an\u00e1lisis por rmn y ms permiti\u00f3 demostrar que uno de ellos acumula ny-acetildiaminobustirato, el precursor directo de la ecto\u00edna y que, tal como se ha podido demostrar, posee capacidad osmoprotectora y estabilizadora de enzimas. El estudio de los mutantes ha permitido demostrar que la hidroxiecto\u00edna se puede sintetizar directamente por hidroxilaci\u00f3n de la ecto\u00edna o por una ruta alternativa que comienza en el ny-acerildiaminobitirato. Asimismo, se han clonado todos genes necesarios para s\u00edntesis de exto\u00edna, as\u00ed como los genes responsables del transporte. Adem\u00e1s, los genes responsables de la s\u00edntesis de beta\u00edna han sido secuenciados y caracterizados, demostr\u00e1ndose la existencia de 3 fases abiertas de lectura
