Existen diversos modelos animales que reproducen las anomalias caracter\u00edsticas de dicha enfermedad, siendo uno de ellos el que recurre a la administraci\u00f3n intracerebral del i\u00f3n mpp+. Existen evidencias que sugieren que las reacciones de formaci\u00f3n de radicales libres en las que interviene el hierro, as\u00ed como la excitotoxicidad mediada por el glutamato, desempe\u00f1an un papel importante en la toxicidad desencadenada por este compuesto.  en esta memoria, se ha estudiado el papel del glutamato, del ascorbato, del hierro y de la dopamina sobre la acci\u00f3n t\u00f3xica del mpp+. El aumento de los niveles extracelulares de glutamato a traves de la inhibici\u00f3n del transportador no aument\u00f3 la toxicidad del i\u00f3n. Por el contrario, dicha inhibici\u00f3n produjo una marcada protecci\u00f3n frente a la acci\u00f3n tox\u00edca de \u00e9ste. la protecci\u00f3n encontrada puede explicarse por la disminuci\u00f3n en los niveles extracelulares de ascorbato que se produce por la inhibici\u00f3n del transportador de glutamato. A su vez, se ha demostrado que la propia dopamina liberada tras la acci\u00f3n del mpp+ sobre las c\u00e9lulas dopaminer\u00e9rgicas contribuye a la toxicidad del i\u00f3n, y que, en presencia de hierro, la toxicidad de \u00e9sta se incrementa notablemente. Se ha estudiado tambi\u00e9n el efecto que presenta un quelante de hierro sobre la toxicidad del mpp+ en la sustancia negra y en el cuerpo estriado, encontrandose que, en ambos casos, la retirada del
