Una segunda entidad nosol\u00f3gica causada por el g\u00e9nero borrelia es la borreliosis de fiebres recurrentes.  en esta tesis nos hemos interesado en dos aspectos del g\u00e9nero borrelia, en su diversidad gen\u00e9tica y relaciones filog\u00e9nicas, as\u00ed como en el fen\u00f3meno de variaci\u00f3n antig\u00e9nica que sufren distintas especies pertenecientes a este g\u00e9nero.  la peculiar distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica de b. Burgdorferi sensu lato en los dos contienentes separados por el oc\u00e9ano atl\u00e1ntico nos ha llevado ha establecer una hip\u00f3tesis del proceso de especiaci\u00f3n y migraci\u00f3n de \u00e9ste. previos estudios moleculares muestran la estrecha relaci\u00f3n entre las cepas americanas y europeas de b. Burgdorferi sensu stricto, sugiriendo un ancestro com\u00fan americano. en este estudio hemos confirmado este hecho y establecido una hip\u00f3tesis de cuando y como ha ocurrido la migraci\u00f3n entre los dos continentes.  un segundo aspecto abordado en esta tesis ha sido el an\u00e1lisis taxon\u00f3mico y filog\u00e9nico de borrelia de fiebres recurrentes, as\u00ed como el desarrollo de un m\u00e9todo simple de identificaci\u00f3n de las fiebres recurrentes y su posible utilizaci\u00f3n en el diagn\u00f3stico.  finalmente nuestro inter\u00e9s se ha centrado en el estudio de la variaci\u00f3n antig\u00e9nica en la lipoprote\u00ednas de membrana externa de b. Turicatae, el agente de fiebres recurrentes.  gracias a m\u00e9todos moleculares hemos podido correlacionar la variabilidad antig\u00e9nica de las prote\u00ednas de membrana con la recombinaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica entre distintos pl\u00e1smidos lineares.
