En relaci\u00f3n con la carcinog\u00e9nesis prost\u00e1tica, se sabe que el cadmio es capaz de originar lesiones invasivas exclusivamente en la pr\u00f3stata ventral de la rata; esto puede ponerse en relaci\u00f3n con la incapacidad de esta regi\u00f3n de la pr\u00f3stata de la rata para expresar metalotione\u00edna. Existe una correlaci\u00f3n entre los niveles de cadmio y zinc y el efecto carcinogen\u00e9tico del primero, en el sentido de que dosis altas de zinc, al preservar la funci\u00f3n testicular potencialmente da\u00f1ada por el cadmio, mantiene el est\u00edmulo androg\u00e9nico sobre la pr\u00f3stata incrementando las posibilidades de malignizaci\u00f3n. En el presente trabajo se pretende establecer si el cloruro de cadmio, administrado por v\u00eda oral, en dosis muy bajas, y durante largo tiempo, es capaz de originar lesiones premalignas en la pr\u00f3stata de la rata, similares a las observadas en el pin humano. en este estudio, por lo tanto, se intentar\u00e1 caracterizar esas lesiones desde el punto de vista inmunohistoqu\u00edmico y morfom\u00e9trico (estereol\u00f3gico) para detectar si la exposici\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica a cadmio en los roedores constituye un modelo aceptable para estudiar el origen del pin. Para ello, se han estudiado un total de 44 ratas wistar, machos adultos: 19 controles y 25 tratadas con cloruro de cadmio (80 ppm, en el agua de bebida, durante 18 meses). En dichos animales se realizar\u00e1:  1. Descripci\u00f3n del comportamiento de los distintos compartimentos histol\u00f3gicos de la pr\u00f3stata de la rata durante la exposici\u00f3n, a largo plazo, al cloruro de cadmio suministrado en el agua de bebida.  2. Caracterizaci\u00f3n de las presuntas lesiones preneopl\u00e1sicas que puedan surgir en el curso del tratamiento con cloruro de cadmio, con el fin de compararlas con las lesiones del pin humano.  3.
