Se ha comprobado la presencia de amplificaci\u00f3n en el del receptor del factor de crecimiento epidermico, la existencia de mutaciones en p53 o bien de perdida de heterocigosidad. se han analizado inmunohistoquimicamente los tumores para comprobar la expresi\u00f3n de p53. Se han estudiado 9 marcadores de microsat\u00e9lites con el fin de valorar la existencia de inestabilidad en microsat\u00e9lites, dos de ellos adyacentes a los genes oncosupresores ing 1 y dmnbt1. Se ha estudiado la existencia de mutaciones asociadas a inestabilidad en los tractos de pares de bases repetidas presentes en los genes tgfbrii, bax, hmsh3 y hmsh6.  se ha encontrado inestabilidad y\/o mutaciones asociadas a la misma en el gen tgfbrii en la totalidad de tumores astrociticos de grado bajo estudiados, lo que sugiere que la deficiencia en reparaci\u00f3n es un suceso temprano en la progresi\u00f3n de estos tumores. En astrocitomas de grado alto, hay una relaci\u00f3n significativa entre la presencia de mutaciones en tgfbrii y la amplificaci\u00f3n del gen del receptor del factor de crecimiento epid\u00e9rmico. No se han encontrado mutaciones en los genes bax, homsh6 y hmsh3 (con una sola excepci\u00f3n).
