Considerados como vestigios de la musculatura de la pierna, eran extirpados sin considerar las consecuencias delet\u00e9reas para la articulaci\u00f3n. Actualmente se ha comprobado su importancia en el bienestar de la rodilla.  estudio morfol\u00f3gico desarrollado en 31 meniscos de donantes humanos (edad media 33,4 a\u00f1os), 78 meniscos de macaco (edad media 3,8 a\u00f1os) y 78 meniscos de cordero (edad media 0,41 a\u00f1os). Utilizamos la t\u00e9cnica de perfusi\u00f3n vascular con azul berl\u00edn y diafanizaci\u00f3n tisular con la t\u00e9cnica de spalteholz en 7 rodillas de cordero. Un estudio histol\u00f3gico con hematoxilina-eosina, tricr\u00f3mico de masson y safranina o e inmunohistoqu\u00edmica para el factor de von willebrand, prote\u00edna s-100, interleuquina-1 (il-1), fgf a y b, igf-1 y 2, y col\u00e1genos tipo i, ii, iii y vi. Histomorfometr\u00eda para determinar el n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas por \u00e1rea, superficie vascular y \u00e1rea te\u00f1ida con safranina o como par\u00e1metro de la distribuci\u00f3n de proteoglicanos. adem\u00e1s se realiz\u00f3 microscop\u00eda electr\u00f3nica de barrido.  los vasos mostraron una distribuci\u00f3n preferente en ambos cuernos meniscales. histomorfom\u00e9tricamente la vascularizaci\u00f3n fue similar en las tres especies con un 3,5% de superficie vascular en el hombre, 5% en el macaco y menor, 2,2% en el cordero. La distribuci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna s-100 fue similar en las tres especies en las c\u00e9lulas redondas del espesor del menisco, mientras que la il-1 lo hizo en c\u00e9lulas de diferente morfolog\u00eda. La inmunorreactividad (ir) frente a fgf e igf fue moderada y d\u00e9bil en las tres especies. El patr\u00f3n de distribuci\u00f3n de los diferentes tipos de col\u00e1geno fue similar en las tres especies. la distribuci\u00f3n de la tinci\u00f3n de safranina o tiene un patr\u00f3n diferente seg\u00fan la especie.
