Tales transiciones pueden ser evitadas por medio de un sistema de limpieza o colimaci\u00f3n que confina las p\u00e9rdidas en zonas de la m\u00e1quina no superconductoras. debido a la alta energ\u00eda e intesidad previstas para el lhc el sistema de colimaci\u00f3n que sea instalado ha de alcanzar una eficiencia sin precedentes.  en una primera fase, el sistema de colimaci\u00f3n se ha dise\u00f1ado a partir de modelos puramente geom\u00e9tricos que utilizan aproximaciones lineales para la \u00f3ptica del acelerador y colimadores completamente absorbentes. En una fase posterior del dise\u00f1o, se considera la difusi\u00f3n de protones a trav\u00e9s del material del colimador. Una serie de experimentos han sido realizados durante 1996 y 1997 cuyo objetivo principal es comprobar la validez de las especificaciones de dise\u00f1o. Para ello se ha empleado un sistema de colimaci\u00f3n comparable al del lhc. Las predicciones del modelo num\u00e9rico utilizado para calcular la eficiencia del sistema han sido comparadas a los datos recogidos durante las sesiones experimentales.  los experimentos indican los puntos en los que un refinamiento del modelo se hace necesario y subrayan las limitaciones a las que se enfrenta un sistema de colimaci\u00f3n de naturaleza tan compleja. Asimismo, revelan la importancia para el modelo de simulaci\u00f3n de un buen conocimiento de par\u00e1metros como la velocidad de difusi\u00f3n de las part\u00edculas, o la apertura mec\u00e1nica de la m\u00e1quina. Los experimentos confirman la necesidad de controlar y estabilizar la \u00f3rbita de referencia a lo largo de la secci\u00f3n de colimaci\u00f3n adem\u00e1s de la sensibilidad de la colimaci\u00f3n
