Melitensis de un nuevo macrolido de reciente comercializacion: azitromicina: para ello, se realizaron estudios in vivo e in vitro, comparando la eficacia antimicrobiana de azitromicina con el tratamiento convencional de la brucelosis (doxicicina sola o combinada con estreptomicina).  en los estudios in vivo se han desarrollado distintos modelos experimentales murinos de infeccion (cronica y aguda) por brucella, realizando seguimientos de tipo microbiologico, serologico y farmacocinetico. In vitro, se estudiaron distintos factores que pudieran condicionar la actividad antibacteriana in vivo. Los resultados indicaron que en nuestras condiciones experimentales, la pauta de azitromicina (50 mg\/kg\/dia, 10 dias) consiguio reducir significativamente la infeccion por brucella en el raton. Sin embargo, fue inferior en eficacia al tratamiento convencional con doxiciclina. El modelo de infeccion letal desarrollado en este trabajo puede considerarse adecuada para el estudio experimental de nuevos antimicrobianos frente a b. Melitensis. Las ventajas del mismo no son solo economicas, sino que suponen una mayor rapidez en la evaluacion. En este modelo, doxiciclina sigue confirmando su mayor efectividad.  la actividad in vitro de azitromicina frente a brucella aumento significativamente cuando el medio base empleado fue mueller-hinton, aunque azitromicina fue eficaz in vivo, parece no aconsejable su uso en la brucelosis.
