Capitulo de la tesis se expone la critica de leibniz al argumento ontologico, especialmente en su version cartesiana. Como resultado, leibniz considera que el argumento cartesiano tiene un valor presuntivo o moral pero no es una demostracion rigurosa. En el segundo capitulo se expone un argumento a priori, tipicamente leigniziano, al que n. Rescher llama argumento modal.  este argumento prefigura la prueba kantiana del beweisgrund y el argumento modal contemporaneo defendido por ch hartshorne. El argumento modal solo es demostrativo dentro de un sistema logico y ontologico en el que la categoria fundamental es la posibilidad. Los elementos principales de ese sistema -la exigencia de existir de los posibles, la realidad ideal de la posibilidad, la composibilidad y los mundos posibles, la existencia, la necesidad y la contingencia- son expuestos en el tercer capitulo.
