Se ha dividido en cinco partes por razones de metodolog\u00eda. La primera nos da una  introduccion historica y geografica de lo que es el occidente de mejico . Una segunda parte trata sobre nayarit  y se divide en varios epigrafes  una dedicado a la historia de la arqueolog\u00eda  otro a la formacion historica del estado  otro a las manifestaciones artisticas del periodo preclasico  luego del clasico  y por ultimo del postclasico. Una tercera parte hace lo mismo con  jalisco  y una cuarta con  colima . La quinta parte denominada  vision de conjunto  dedica un capitulo a interpretar algunos tipos de esculturas que aparecen en los tres estados citados  en otro se citan museos con piezas del occidente y un ultimo recoge cronicas de las primeras exploraciones espa\u00f1olas.
