Se han estudiado 3 familias de compuestos: derivados de la fenetilamina; del triptofano; de la beta-carbolina. Las asociaciones de los compuestos de esta ultima familia son con mucho las mas estables. Los valores numericos de las constantes de asociacion en medio acuoso son un orden de magnitud superiores a las de las otras familias  al menos lo que se corresponde con una mayor actividad inhibidora
