Los ferrocarriles  que se construyeron a partir de 1855  son abordados en esta tesis bajo las tres facetas siguientes: primero  como ahorradores de recursos; segundo  como demandantes de productos siderurgicos y de carbon; y tercero  en relacion con la integracion del mercado interior. El primer punto conlleva la estimacion del ahorro social de los ferrocarriles  que indica que estos contribuyeron al 12 por ciento de la renta nacional en 1878 y al 23 por ciento en 1912. En relacion con el segundo punto  los ferrocarriles no empezaron a demandar cantidades importantes de hierro y acero espa\u00f1ol hasta los a\u00f1os 1890 pero por el contrario  consumieron aproximadamente el 20 por ciento de la hulla producida en espa\u00f1a.
