Este fenomeno regulatorio no se debe a un efecto adverso de los aminoacidos sobre el crecimiento celular  sino a represion de los genes que codifican para la biosintesis de paba-sintetasa. Este enzima solamente ha sido encontrado en cepas de streptomyces productoras de polienos aromaticos y juega un papel importante en la biosintesis de candicidina. Se ha establecido una correlacion lineal entre produccion de antibiotico y niveles intracelulares de paba-sintetasa. Todos los mutantes no productores  obtenidos por tratamientos especificos para eliminar plasmidos  carecen de dicho enzima. Se ha encontrado un plasmido (sgp1) en la cepa silvestre de s.
