Las especies dominantes compiten entre si por la luz y el sulfhidrico y experimentan cambios metabolicos importantes dependiendo de los parametros fisico-quimicos del medio. Asi las celulas de chromatiumminus cuando crecen en su medio natural y en condiciones limitantes de luz  mantienen su nivel energetico mediante una respiracion anaerobia endogena que comporta el acumulo de poli-b-hichoxibutivato detectable en secciones ultrafinas. Estas celulas presentan bacterias epibrontes que ejercen un papel selectivo sobre la poblacion. El m.E.
