Se repasan distintas ecuaciones matematicas y tecnicas experimentales mas comunes. Despues de dar un repaso a los ensayos con modelo reducido que han servido de base experimental se pasa a establecer unos indices de maniobrabilidad que no dependen del angulo del timon. Se establecen unas relaciones entre estos indices  los parametros geometricos de la carena y la fuerza en el timon. Despues se estudian las fuerzas y momentos en el timon  en flujo uniforme y a popa de la carena y en el chorro de la helice.
