Hasta el momento los estudios sobre interneuronas en la medula espinal  se han centrado sobre sus posibles implicaciones motoras. Mediante depositos de hrp (horse radish peroxidase) en asta posterior en unos animales y en region intermedio en otros  hemos llegado a la conclusion de la existencia de conexiones propioespinales cortas en asta posterior representadas por las laminas iv y v. Asimismo la lamina ii se ha comportado como propioespinal solamente a nivel segmentario. Esta cadena dorsal serie moduladora y integrante de la respuesta rapida o primer dolor ante un estimulo nocieptivo. En regiones mas ventrales  las neuronas propiospinales quedan representadas por neuronas de laminas vii y viii de conexion mas larga.
