El producto genico de este locus  el enzima alcohol deshidrogenasa (adh) juega un papel importante en la utilizacion y\/o detoxificacion del alcohol ambiental. Se analizaron las propiedades cineticas sobre diversos sustratos alcoholicos de las dos variantes alozimicas principales (adh-f y adh-s). Los resultados indican (1) ambas moleculas no difieren entre si con respecto a la actividad enzimatica; (2) el enzima adh-f presenta una constante de michaelis-menten para el sustrato 2-propanol inferior a la del enzima adh-s; (3) se confirma la interaccion genotipo-isopropanol previamente detectada. Si estos resultados tienen significado adaptativo  es posible hacer predicciones sobre el comportamiento deeste locus en poblaciones experimentales. Los cambios de frecuencias genicas observados en dichas poblaciones demuestran que estas predicciones se cumplen y apoyan la idea de que la variabilidad genetica del locus adh en poblaciones naturales
