Las aplicaciones de n en sementera (40-45 kg\/ha) son las que ejercen mayor influencia sobre la cosecha  por su efecto sobre el n de ahijamientos  las aplicaciones de n en cobertera tardia son poco o nada efectivas. Las cosechas grano se encuentran intimamente relacionadas con la capacidad de almacenamiento potencial (cap) y muy poco con la duracion del area foliar (lad) y la eficiencia asimiladora durante la maduracion (g). La cantidad final de espigas depende del n de ahijamientos que alcancen el final del enca\u00f1ado y de su perdida posterior. Aquellos ahijamientos que presenten una longitud inferior a 1\/3 de la del tallo principal no formaran espiga. El peso seco de las hojas puede sustituir a la superficie foliar y la longitud del raquis permite calcular el n de granos por espiga. El azufre por via foliar (12 5 kg\/ha) al final del ahijado suplementa la accion del n en niveles bajos (20-30 kg\/ha)  pero no la sustituye. Su accion coincide con la del n en aplicacion temprana  elevando el n de espigas por planta son modificar significativamente ni el n de granos por espiga ni el peso de 1.000
