La frecuencia de variantes de la fosfatasa alcalina entre estirpes comutantes es del 6%. La movilidad electroforetica y la termoestabilidad permiten detectar estas variantes y tambien las presentes en estirpes naturales de e. Coli.  otros parametros enzimaticos no son adecuados para la deteccion de variantes pero permiten la caracterizacion bioquimica detallada de las variantes detectadas por otros metodos. Los resultados obtenidos abren el camino para el estudio de variantes enzimaticas no seleccionadas. Aunque no es posible la comparacion exhaustiva del espectro mutacional naciente (producto de mutaciones aleatorias) y el establecido (en poblaciones naturales)  los resultados parecen apoyar a la
