En la entrada del nitrato a la celula participa una permeasa que lo transporta activamente. El nitrato se reduce hasta el termino de amonio utilizando directamente electrones generados en la fotolisis del agua. Finalmente  el amonio se incorpora en esqueletos carbonados mediante el concurso de la ruta de asimilacion glutamina sintetasa\/glutamato sintasa. La utilizacion del nitrato en a. Nidulans se encuentra modulada por productos de la asimilacion del amonio  que actuarian inhibiendo el transporte del nitrato al interior de la celula. El sistema de regulacion del transporte del nitrato parece incluir tambien productos de la fijacion fotosintetica del anhidrido carbonico  que actuarian como antagonistas de los inhibidores derivados de la asimilacion del amonio. Por otra parte  las celulas de a. Nidulans producen altas cantidades de amonio cuando se incuban en presencia de l-aminoacidos basicos  actividad catalizada por una l-aminoacido oxidasa especifica de aminoacidos
