Se ha encontrado que la elevada toxicidad que exhiben aquellos compuestos se debe a la produccion intracelular de especies activas del oxigeno fundamentalmente peroxido de hidrogeno y radical libre hidroxilo. Aunque la celula bacteriana dispone de un efificnete sistema de defensa contra el peroxido de hidrogeno que se forma en condiciones normales de cultivo la presencia de los viologenos conduce a una superproduccion del peroxido y a una inmediata reaccion de este con iones metalicos adventicios para originiar el radical libre hidroxilo. Nitrato reductasa y nitrito reductasa se inactivaron in vitro por el peroxido de hidrogeno  pero eran estables intracelularmente en condiciones de superproduccion de peroxido. La glutamina sintetasa  por el contrario  fue rapidamente inactivada in vitro e in vivo por el radical hidroxilo. Este trabajo puede ser de relevante significacionen estudios sobre la toxicidad de los viologenos y en procesos tales como envejecimiento y carcinogenesis  donde las especies activas del oxigeno
