La 9-cloro-10-hidroxiantracen-1 4-diona constituye un producto de partida asequible a partir del cual se pueden llevar a cabo sintesis de antraciclinonas con muy altos rendimientos  basadas en la recuperacion de la estructura quinonica por sustitucion del cloro en condiciones de reaccion thiele-winter.
