Este complejo esta implicado en la diferenciacion de estructuras nerviosas a partir del ectodermo  tanto del sistema nervioso central como del periferico . Este sistema ha permitido detectar dos genes hairy y extramacrochaetae.  el analisis de sus interacciones con el complejo achaete-scute de muestras que  efectivamente  hairy y extramacrochaetae se comportan geneticamente como reguladores del complejo achaete-scute  actuando en un sistema de regulacion genetico de tipo negativo. La diferenciacion de organos del sistema nervioso periferico esta unida al problema de la disposicion espacial de estas estructuras. En este trabajo se ha comprobado la existencia de interacciones celulares  a traves de procesos inhibitorios siendo la disposicion espacial de estas estructuras resultado de dichas
