El gradiente critico de temperatura necesario para iniciar la conveccion en una capa horizontal de nematico es unas 500 veces inferior al que se necesita para liquidos ordinarios. El signo del gradiente depende de la configuracion del nematico.  cuando esta es paralela a las placas (planar) la capa de nematico es inestable cuando se calienta por abajo y cuando la configuracion es perpendicular (homeotropo) la inestabilidad solo es posible calentando por arriba. En ambos casos la inestabilidad es estacionaria. Nosotros resolvemos numericamente el problema obteniendo valores para los gradientes que estan de acuerdo con los experimentos.
