Coli purificada hasta homogeneidad se inactiva por reduccion con nadph y en menor proporcion con nadh  siendo protegida frete a la inactivacion por tioles  ditioles y disulfuros  en especial por gssg que ademas la reactiva eficazmente.  ambos procesos de inactivacion y reactivacion son dependientes del tiempo  temperatura  concentracion de enzima y del reductor u oxidante y ph. En la enzima de extractos crudos tambien se produjo la interconversion redox aunque con menor eficacia. En cambio  la enzima de celulas permeabilizadas de e. Coli es mas sensible. Por ultimo se investigo este fenomeno in vivo en celulas intactas de e. Coli encontrandose que la glutation reductasa se inactiva por sustratos capaces de generar intracelularmente nad(p)h. La enzima resulta protegida por diamida frente a la inactivacion por malato. Ademas la diamida  capaz de generar gssg a partir del gsh intracelular  la reactiva eficazmente en un proceso independiente de la sintesis de proteina.
