Los ensayos de mutagenesis o de carcinogenesis en mamiferos de experimentacion son muy costosos  largos y de sensibilidad limitada. Los ensayos que utilizan bacterias como organismos indicadores de actividad mutagenica gozan de gran sensibilidad  sencillez rapidez y economia. Se han reunido y comparado la sensibilidad de dos de estos sistemas bacterianos. Uno de estos sistemas utiliza una bateria de auxotrofoshis que revierten por cambio moleculares especificos  el otro  de resistencia a l-arabinosa selecciona a partir de una sola estirpe aras mutaciones directas en varios genes del operonara. Se transfirio la mutacion responsable del fenotipo arasa dos de los auxotrofoshis y a continuacion se analizo la respuesta de ambos sistemas a un grupo escogido de mutagenos y\/o carcinogenos empleando dos tipos de ensayo:  en cajas selectivas y en liquidos. El sistema directo ara detecta con mayor o igual sensibilidad la actividad mutagenica de 18 a los 21 compuestos estudiados.
