Trata de la genesis de la moderna aceptacion del vacio, abordando varios ambitos: el cientifico, el filosofico, el teologico, en ocasiones el matematico, el animico.  la parte i (antecedentes) estudia las principales doctrinas filosoficas y los argumentos empiricos de los ingenieros alejandrinos. Tambien el principio del horror vacui del pensamiento medieval, la relacion entre divinidad y vacuidad, la incidencia de las nuevas concepciones del espacio y la confusion entre eter y vacio.  la parte ii (vacuismo y antivacuismo en la revolucion cientifica) presenta el gran debate del siglo xvii. Se explica el aspecto cientifico-experimental y el filosofico; pero tambien otros: la tradicion escolastica, el pensamiento mistico, la llamada filosofia oculta. En ese proceso se destaca la relacion del vacuismo con el dilema panteismo\/nullibismo.  la parte iii (el climax de la polemica. Influjos orientales) considera el clima de opinion reflejado en el dictionnaire de bayle, destacando el impacto de las filosofias orientales en el pensamiento europeo -concretamente en el caso de
