Uno de ellos opera en las no fijadoras de dinitrogeno y responde fundamentalmente a una represion nutricional por amonio.  el otro opera en las fijadoras y responde a una induccion por nitrato y a un afecto negativo del amonio que podria ejercerse a traves de represion o de inhibicion de la entrada en la celula del nitrato. El efecto represor del amonio requiere su incorporacion en compuestos organicos nitrogenados. La nitrato reductasa de anacystis nidulans es mas estable en presencia de nitrato  nitrito amonio que en ausencia de nutrientes nitrogenados  lo cual contribuye al establecimiento de los niveles celulares de actividad caracteristicos de cada una de dichas situaciones. La nitrato y la nitrito reductasa de anacystis se sintetizan simultaneamente en respuesta a la eliminacion del amonio del medio de cultivo y parecen estar sujetas a mecanismos comunes de
