No tiene  sin embargo  un unico mecanismo de accion antivirica  sino que es capaz de inhibir a los diferentes virus por distintos mecanismos que afectan procesos diversos de sus ciclos infectivos. Mientras que en el caso de virus cuyo material genetico es adn afecta alguna fase tardia de su ciclo (ensamblaje de sus proteinas al virus herpes simplex tipo 1)  en el de los virus cuyo material genetico es arn parece afectar una etapa temprana  impidiendo la sintesis de sus proteinas en la mayoria de los casos no parece probable en ningun caso la intervencion en su accion antiviral en celulas intactas de las enzimas (proteina quinasa y 2 -5  a sntetasa) que el interferon induce en las mismas y que provocan un bloqueo general de la traduccion en extracto
