A pesar de los avances en el diagn\u00f3stico, t\u00e9cnicas quir\u00fargicas y terapias adyuvantes, la aparici\u00f3n de met\u00e1stasis sigue siendo la principal causa de muerte en los pacientes con melanoma de \u00favea. Hasta un 50% de los pacientes morir\u00e1n a los 10 a\u00f1os del diagn\u00f3stico inicial debido a la parici\u00f3n de met\u00e1stasis, principalmente en el h\u00edgado. A lo largo de las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas se han identificado varios par\u00e1metros pron\u00f3sticos metast\u00e1sicos, cl\u00ednicos e histopatol\u00f3gicos.  actualmente, las principales l\u00edneas de investigaciones se centran en el an\u00e1lisis de las alteraciones gen\u00e9ticas y moleculares que puedan estar asociadas al desarrollo de met\u00e1stasis en melanoma de \u00favea y permitan establecer de forma precoz los genotipos-fenotipos m\u00e1s agresivos as\u00ed como desarrollar nuevas alternativas terap\u00e9uticas. Las quimiocinas constituyen un grupo de mol\u00e9culas de bajo peso molecular con propiedades quimioatrayentes implicadas en un gran n\u00famero de procesos fisiol\u00f3gicos y patol\u00f3gicos. Se ha visto que en un gran n\u00famero de neoplasisas existe un entramado de quimiocinas y sus receptores cuya producci\u00f3n, expresi\u00f3n y se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n se encuentra alterada. la quimiocina cxcl12, tambi\u00e9n llamada stromal-derived factor-1 (sdf-1), y su receptor transmembrana cxcr4 son un ejemplo de ello. La interacci\u00f3n entre ambas prote\u00ednas desencadena diversas funciones biol\u00f3gicas dentro del proceso cancer\u00edgeno, tanto a nivel del tumor primario como en la cascada metast\u00e1sica.
