Ambas actividades enzimaticas residen en dos proteinas separadas y que se encuentran o unidas a membrana o en distintos compartimentos subcelulares.  chlamydomonas puede crecer en medios con alantoina o alantoato como unicas fuentes de nitrogeno, siendo la alantoinasa una enzima constitutiva mientras que la alantoicasa es inducible. La actividad alantoinasa se ha purificado parcialmente mientras que la alantoicasa se ha purificado hasta homogeneidad electroforetica. Se han estudiado las principales propiedades cataliticas de dichas enzimas purificadas.
