Los patrones de metilaci\u00f3n de adn se mantienen estables durante sucesivas divisiones celulares pero tambi\u00e9n se modifican por desmitilaci\u00f3n local o global del genoma en etapas concretas del desarrollo que requieren una reprogramaci\u00f3n epigen\u00e9tica. En contraste con los bienes caracterizados mecanismos de metilaci\u00f3n, la naturaleza de las enzimas responsables de la desmetilaci\u00f3n del adn y la consiguiente reactivaci\u00f3n de genes previamente silenciados a\u00fan no ha podido determinarse con exactitud, en parte por la dificultad de realizar an\u00e1lisis gen\u00e9ticos y moleculares en organismos con patrones de metilaci\u00f3n alterados.     durante la realizaci\u00f3n de estas tesis se han identificado y caracterizado dos genes de la planta modelo arabidopsis thaliana, denominados dme y ros1, codificantes de enzimas que inician un proceso de desmetilaci\u00f3n activa del adn. Los resultados obtenidos indican que dme y ros1 son dos adn glicosilasas pertenecientes a la superfamilia hhh-gpd. Ambas prote\u00ednas son mucho m\u00e1s voluminosas que las adn glicosilasas t\u00edpicas, y presentan un dominio hhh-gpd de aproximadamente 240 amino\u00e1cidos pr\u00f3ximo a su extremo carboxilo-terminal. Existen prote\u00ednas con secuencias similares en otras especies vegetales, pero no en arqueobacterias, bacterias, hongos o animales. Por lo tanto, dme y ros1 definen una nueva subfamilia de adn glicosilasas espec\u00edficas de plantas.     dme y ros1 se expresan en un amplio rango de tejidos, y plantas     deficientes en cualquiera de los dos genes presentan un crecimiento m\u00e1s lento y un fenotipo pleiotr\u00f3pico con diversas alteraciones en su desarrollo, incluyendo modificaciones en la morfolog\u00eda floral y la
