En el presente estudio fue investigado el mecanismo por el que ocurre esta estabilizacion.  los experimentos realizados sobre celulas leucemicas humanas nos mostraron que el fenomeno de la estabilizacion es coherente con un mecanismo redox de la membrana plasmatica que reduce radical libre de ascorbato hasta ascorbato utilizando como fuente de poder reductor el nadh intracelular. El proceso de estabilizacion de ascorbato depende al menos de tres elementos integrados en la membrana plasmatica: a) una proteina con actividad redox nadh-coq reductasa, b) del transportador lipofilico de electrones coq, y c) de la integridad del glicocalix celular.  el sistema estabilizador de ascorbato es modulado por el segundo mensajero intracelular ampc y por factores de crecimiento como la transferrina o el factor de crecimiento epidermico.
