Los compuestos con transici\u00f3n de esp\u00edn son conmutables entre dos estados en competici\u00f3n termodin\u00e1mica: el estado de esp\u00edn alto y el estado de esp\u00edn bajo. Ambos estados se diferencian en sus propiedades magn\u00e9ticas, \u00f3pticas y estructurales. El cambio de estado puede estimularse mediante una variaci\u00f3n de la temperatura, presi\u00f3n o irradaci\u00f3n con la luz. En general, la existencia de interacciones comparativas de origen el\u00e1stico imprimen a la transici\u00f3n de esp\u00edn un car\u00e1cter discontinuo y en ocasiones con hist\u00e9resis lo que confiere a estos sistemas efecto de memoria.  en el primer cap\u00edtulo se realiza una visi\u00f3n general sobre las transiciones de esp\u00edn: antecedentes y situaci\u00f3n actual, aspectos conceptuales, definiciones, relevancia e inter\u00e9s genera.  en el segundo cap\u00edtulo se presenta un estudio del efecto de los contraiones y las mol\u00e9culas de disolvente en las transiciones de esp\u00edn.
